Ian Mitchell, a successful criminal defense lawyer, is getting divorced from his wife. Now he only sees his beloved daughter on weekends. One morning, as he was barely sending the girl off to her mother, he flinches at the sound of a doorbell. The hero finds a beautiful box made of red wood addressed to him on the porch. Looking inside, he discovers a photograph of an unknown man and a loaded pistol. The photo indicates the name and address of the person Mitchell must kill within three days. Ian looks around and at that moment hears a sharp gunshot. The bullet whizzes just above his head, shattering the glass of a wall painting. Shaken, he calls the police. Detective Inkster explains that Daniel Easton, Ian's potential victim, owns a private dental practice. Mitchell refuses to believe that someone would want the death of an honest dentist. The law enforcement officer behaves very strangely. He asks the victim ridiculous questions and laughs all the time. The detective hands over his business card and leaves, leaving the hero the box with the "Beretta". At first, the lawyer thinks that an offended client is seeking revenge, but further events make Ian give up hasty conclusions...
