For the first time in Britain, a detective sequel was shown on March 13, 1997, and filming is still ongoing. Only in the 14th season were corrections made, and Tom Barnaby was replaced by actor Neil Dudgeon. He took the place of the well-known John Nettles. The first season was created by director Brian True-May in famous counties such as Hertfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire. Oxfordshire and Surrey were also included.

The plot unfolds in a fictional county called Midsomer. In her cottage, a dead woman named Emily Simpson was found. The best employees of the local police – Inspector Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Troy – take on this case. According to preliminary data, it was suicide. However, according to the words of her friend, it was a death as a result of violent actions. The woman's statement was confirmed by a forensic expert during the autopsy. But the traces of the crime lead law enforcement officers to the distant past, when there were numerous similar crimes that were never solved. According to Barnaby's opinion, this is a chain of serial murders. Meanwhile, a new series of lawlessness is taking place. Several peaceful citizens have been killed. In each part of this series, the tandem of professional detectives unravels even the most complex cases.
