The events of the time before the Great Patriotic War. The Morozovs lead a slow village life. Two brothers, Stepan and Alexey, and two sisters, Varvara and Alyona. Each of them had plans and dreams, but the merciless war is ready to grind anyone who gets caught in its nets. Stepan lived with a girl named Varya and planned to marry her. However, he soon met Olga and ran away with her, without even inquiring about Varya's life. But fate soon caught up with him. Stepan goes to the front, where he falls into captivity. He goes through all the horrors of the Gestapo. Alexey lived with Lila almost ten years before they got married. Lila never worked, she just sat on a bench in the courtyard. But war came to their doorstep. Alexey becomes a military doctor. The sisters' lives also didn't go smoothly. Alyona fell in love with Ignat. But the lack of money put her on a slippery slope - she started selling herself. After some time, her promiscuous lifestyle leads her to become a "kept woman". As a result, Ignat gets tired of his future fiancée's constant infidelity and leaves Alyona. He then marries her sister, Varvara.
