The film by Peter Cattaneo "The A Word" appeared on the BBC One channel on March 22, 2016. Its key characters are an ordinary family who are faced with a severe test: the parents once learn about their youngest child's incurable disease.

Of course, the mother noticed her son's excessive shyness and suspicious aloofness. He preferred solitary activities to active communication with peers. And sometimes he openly boycotted his parents' instructions or simply withdrew into himself. But the Hughes explained this by saying that it was just age-related changes and patiently waited for the child's psyche to strengthen. The diagnosis of "autism" immediately explained all the peculiarities in Joe's behavior and condemned the parents to initially search for the cause of such deviation in their heir. But various encyclopedias and the World Wide Web stubbornly refused to provide accurate facts about the occurrence of the disease, and most importantly, effective treatment methods. Doctors also shrugged their shoulders, reassuring worried relatives that such children become excellent diligent workers and quiet calm members of society. Polu and Alison soon had to face ridicule and disdain from neighbors, acquaintances, and complete strangers, to which they simply had to get used to and not pay attention to snide remarks about Joe.
