The series is based on the events of 2014 on the M4 highway in Russia, but does not exactly correspond to them: the court case has not yet been closed.

A gang started operating on the highway, targeting motorists. The bandits set up spiked traps and then killed the drivers with firearms. The road killers leave no traces, as if they vanish into thin air. The media gave the group a catchy name - "GTA Bandits," as the plot of the eponymous video game involves car theft and numerous murders. Investigators struggled to find a motive, as the criminals' goal was clearly not robbery, since the victims still had all their valuables. The case is handed over to Melnikov, an expert in especially serious crimes, and Zvonarev, a police officer. They used to collaborate a long time ago, but it ended with an unresolved conflict. Now each of them starts unraveling the tangle in their own ways. But Zvonarev and Melnikov are not the only ones looking for the culprits. Internet blogger Maria Kormakova is conducting her own investigation of this extraordinary case. She used to edit the crime chronicle, so she is quite competent in the field of investigation. This is not just curiosity - Maria's brother was killed during one of the attacks, and she will contribute to capturing the killers. It is important for all three of them to understand that the case is more important than personal disputes, to unite and find the gang.
