Four friends were friends from childhood. The series covers the process of their maturation and adulthood over several years - from 1961 to 1991. From a young age, each of them had grand plans for their lives. However, fate decreed that they all had to engage in underground economic activities in all its manifestations. The harsh reality of life pushed the heroes away from their true desires and plans. One of the friends named Konstantin owed five thousand rubles to local gangsters after losing in cards. His friends decide to engage in speculative activities to help their comrade out of trouble. In 1961, Andrey published his story in a state magazine for the first time. He wanted to start a career as a writer. However, after returning from Moscow, he faces completely different problems. He is preparing to marry Nadezhda, and Konstantin has his own bride - Zinaida. Andrey decides to pursue a promotion and establishes a connection with Lanskaya. She is the chief editor of the "Youth" magazine. After that, he gets a position as the literary secretary of the famous Soviet poet and writer Svetlov. Soon, their activities attract the attention of the authorities.
