Braine Heartsfield steals a white Mercedes. He drives to a job fair and runs over 16 people to death. Police officer Bill Hodges realizes during the investigation that it was not an accident. The killer clearly planned this crime. However, the detective soon retires, and the case remains unsolved. After a couple of years, Bill decides to go back to the old materials and try to uncover the truth. Hodges tracks down Braine and offers him a confrontation. Meanwhile, Heartsfield lives with his semi-insane mother. The maniac possesses a technical mind and works in an electrical appliances store. Bill finds Janell, Olivia's sister, who was the real owner of the ill-fated car. She was accused of being connected to Braine, so she can't take it anymore and commits suicide. Janell wants to at least posthumously prove her sister's innocence in the theft of the Mercedes and the subsequent tragedy. A sympathy develops between Hodges and the girl. Meanwhile, electronic genius Heartsfield is preparing for a counterattack.
