The American streaming service Netflix presents its viewers with another psychological thriller based on the eponymous novel by writer Caleb Carr in 2018.

The end of the 19th century, New York becomes a city that has already turned into the "new Babylon". The megalopolis is shaken by a series of mysterious and very cruel murders. Time and time again, the police find mutilated and then killed children in the slums. Each subsequent murder is much more horrifying and brutal than the previous one. These facts indicate that the killer is performing some kind of nightmarish ritual. These atrocities are being investigated by a very colorful character - police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (Harry Hedlund), who is destined to become the twenty-sixth President of the United States in the future. Since the search for the maniac reaches a dead end and the police are unable to solve this bloody puzzle on their own, Theo Roosevelt assembles a bright team of assistants: a well-known psychologist, a specialist in mental disorders - the alienist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), a journalist from the "Times" crime department, John Schuyler Moore (Luke Evans), one of the first ladies among the police, Sarah Howard (Dakota Fanning), as well as detectives who use very unconventional methods in their investigations: the Isaacson brothers. But even such a daring team finds it difficult to resist the universal evil that has awakened in the "new Babylon" and those who personally encounter it do not survive...
