A dramatic series by Steven Soderbergh about the virtuoso doctor of the beginning of the last century, John Thackery, premiered on the Cinemax channel on August 8, 2014.

Dozens of patients are admitted daily to the "Knickerbocker" hospital in New York. Unlike the usual practice of modern doctors, the main characters are severely lacking in hospital equipment. Laser scalpels and numerous functional diagnostic devices have not yet been invented. An ordinary carriage with live horses serves as the ambulance crew. A patient with common cold symptoms could soon die - the wide use of antibiotics was not even mentioned - their discovery would come decades later. The highly talented descendant of Hippocrates, John Thackery, the head surgeon of the department, has access to all medications, and his abuse of narcotics eventually threatens his further work and life. And his colleague, Algernon Edwards, despite his excellent education at Harvard, has to confront the contempt of those around him and the mistrust of his treatment methods. The African American hero has to prove his equality in society, which seeks to oppress racial minorities on a daily basis.
