The story tells about a series of ritualistic murders, the investigation of which is carried out by the young but incredibly talented investigator Margarita Storozheva. Kosarev, the man who was found guilty of these crimes, was sentenced to life imprisonment. He tried to appeal the decision, but the commission denied his appeal. The head of the commission, Ilya Lavrov, a professional psychoanalyst, does not want to help Rita because he is suffering from a break-up with his wife. Soon, Lavrov reluctantly begins to work together with Margarita, although their relationship is initially very difficult. Both have lost loved ones and still suffer from the pain of loss. The trail of the bloody crimes leads the partners to a retired detective named Puchkov, but he refuses to assist the investigation. By tracking the pensioner, the young people realize that he is hiding something and knows much more about the ritual murders than they had assumed. The old investigator has some connections with the mysterious Gavrishin, a man who was suspected of committing similar murders in the past, 25 years ago.
