The story is about a colony of rabbits living in Seldnford. Hazel's younger brother, named Fiver, comes to him and tells him about his terrifying dream. Their whole family dies in an unknown catastrophe, no one survives. Hazel signs up for a meeting with the leader of the clan, Rab Tree, and tells about the impending disaster. But Rab does not believe the visions of a little brother. However, Hazel is confident in the abilities of his beloved brother to predict the future. Therefore, he convinces several members of the clan to escape and find a possible solution to the problem. After they cross the river, the fugitives come across another colony of rabbits. They behave idly, only engaging in dances and songs, not even bothering to search for food. The comfortable and leisurely life of the rabbits who lack nothing seems very suspicious. Moreover, they are aggressively inclined towards strangers from the other side of the river. Hazel and his comrades begin to suspect that the colony is hiding some secret that could be the key to his brother Fiver's dreams.
